Hello, I’m Connor Harbison Founder @ Atlas Urban Farms in the Venture Cafe Cambridge-community! I’m working on vertical farming for chefs, so they can grow their own ingredients, save time and money, and create a more sustainable food system.
I’m changing the world because of a hike in Wyoming. I came down from the mountains to get a beer in Jackson, and spotted a gleaming glass and steel structure across the street from the brewery. Totally out of place. It turned out to be Vertical Harvest, and that was my first encounter with vertical farming. I thought “that’s the future,” growing food vertically in cities and towns where people live. Five years and a few pivots later, I’m building that future with my business Atlas Urban Farms.
As a visitor at Venture Café my opening line to meet new people is “How do you fill your time?” I don’t like the question “what do you do?” because people are so much more than just their jobs. It really opens the door to their whole selves, and I’ve learned so much from people sharing their passions and hobbies.
I utilize this technology because everybody eats. Humans existed for hundreds of thousands of years without software or other technology, but we need food every single day. We’ve become alienated from our food supply, but we have the technology to bring food production to a rapidly urbanizing community.
