Innovation is a process to improve the human condition.

This quote or sentiment did not originate with me, but I have said it countless times over the past four years. It is the backbone of what we do through Venture Cafe in multiple markets around the world. In the United States, this effort is taking on a new light. The human condition, specifically the condition of vulnerable children at our borders, is anything but improved. I think about the reason why people seek refuge in America — they want to enjoy the American Dream we’ve promoted for decades. They want to experience the promises made by Lady Liberty. They want to escape persecution, war, famine, hostility, violence and corruption. In addition to our Aboriginal brothers and sisters, we are a country of immigrants, of refugees, of dreamers, of explorers. But we are broken.

There is zero-sum thinking in the air. Washington seems to have lost the ability to think creatively. They see a problem, and employ a single solution – a solution that tears families apart, puts children in danger, and lacks basic human decency.

What can we do? Rescue.org has outlined 12 ways to help refugees. The most important thing is do something. Be the voice to the voiceless, be the hope for the hopeless, be a leader for the leaderless.
